The fragile Snakes Head Fritillary bulbs should be planted in September and October. Choose a position in full sun or dappled shade. Fritillaria meleagris prefers a free draining soil that is rich in organic matter so add some grit and well rotted manure or compost to the soil prior to planting. Space bulbs randomly throughout the planting area and plant them at 4 times there own depth. For natural looking drifts, gently cast them across a grassy area and plant them where they land!
After flowering it is essential to allow the foliage of Snakes Head Fritillaries to die back naturally. Avoid mowing areas of grass where bulbs are naturalised until their foliage has completely died back.
