When growing bamboo in patio containers, use a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Re-pot the plant at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position in full sun or semi shade; stem colour will be best in full sun. Alternatively plant bamboo directly into borders in a fertile, reliably moist soil. Bamboos particularly dislike very dry soil. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding some well rotted manure or compost.
Feed and water container grown bamboos regularly. Re-pot into successively larger containers as plants increase in size. Bamboos planted directly into borders will require watering for the first two years until fully established. In spring thin out the oldest canes, cutting them back to ground level, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Mature bamboos can be lifted and divided in spring if clumps become congested. In winter, protect canes from cold drying winds.
