Treat your patio or conservatory to a specimen plant that’s both elegant and exotic! Abutilon megapotamicum 'Big Bell' has been carefully trained as a standard to create a superb container plant. The main stems are naturally arching, creating a loose crown, set upon a vertical, clear stem. Bicolour, lantern-like blooms dangle from dainty, wiry stems from summer to autumn, against a dark backdrop of semi-evergreen leaves. This half-hardy shrub makes a superb focal point, but will require winter protection in a warm conservatory or heated greenhouse. Height: 150cm (59"). Spread: 60cm (24").

Grow abutilon plants in any fertile, well drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position. A warm south or west facing wall that is protected from cold winds and hard frosts is ideal. In areas where temperatures regularly drop below -5C (23F), abutilon plants are best grown in large patio containers and moved to a frost free position over winter. When growing abutilon in patio containers, use a loam based compost such as John Innes No. 2.
Feed and water regularly throughout the spring and summer. Abutilon plants do not tolerate overly dry soil and may drop their foliage under such conditions. Prune abutilon lightly in spring, removing any damaged or dead stems.
