Acer palmatum 'Livy' is a very dwarf Acer that makes an excellent choice for container growing in small spaces, offering varied rich red tones that are at their best in partial shade. The deeply lobed, palmate leaves emerge bright red in spring on reddish-brown stems, transitioning to deep burgundy-purple in summer and then blazing brilliant red in autumn before leaf fall.

Acers are slow growing and make ideal specimens for small gardens and containers where they provide multiple seasons of interest. Their refined palmate foliage and graceful form add beautiful texture and structure to gardens, remaining captivating even in winter as the elegant tracery of bare branches emerges. They are perfect for creating a tranquil Japanese garden vibe in even the smallest urban spaces. Height and Spread: 1-1.5m (3.2ft-4.9ft).

Grow Acers in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade. It's important to give plants shelter from strong winds which can scorch the leaves.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
