The large palmate leaves of Acer palmatum 'Sumi-nagashi' deliver a changing palette of vivid red shades throughout the season. In spring, they unfurl a rich purple-red, shifting to bronze green in summer before igniting in fiery crimson in autumn. Delicate spring flowers give way to winged fruits in autumn adding seasonal charm. Initially vase-shaped, it matures into a graceful, spreading canopy, making a striking addition to any garden.

Acers are slow growing and make ideal specimens for small gardens and containers where they provide multiple seasons of interest. Their refined palmate foliage and graceful form add beautiful texture and structure to gardens, remaining captivating even in winter as the elegant tracery of bare branches emerges. Grow Acers in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade. This Acer is much hardier than other Japanese Acers and will cope with more exposed sites.

Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
