Known as the Queen of Ferns, Athyrium filix-femina ‘Victoriae’ is an exceptional form of Lady Fern. Fresh green fronds rise up in an elegant shuttle-cock form. Each frond carries slender leaflets in a skeletal pattern, with the tip of each individual leaflet adorned with a lacy crest. This deciduous fern makes a beautiful addition to a shady spot that stays reliably moist. A good choice for a woodland-type border where foliage texture and colour are the main feature. Try it alongside the linear foliage of Carex and Hakonechloa or the rounded leaves of Hostas or Brunnera. Height and spread: 45cm (18in).

Plant Athyrium in partial shade in fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Athyrium ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting.

Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Leave old fronds on over winter to protect the crown. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around each plant in spring.
