Blackthorn hedges make one of the best security hedges and yet is incredibly attractive too. In May the entire hedge will be covered in clouds of white blooms white give way to dense foliage over the thorny stems and by autumn the well know sloes have formed and will be ready for picking. Blackthorn is well loved by british wildlife for the cover it provides and the fruit is appreciated too - not forgetting it can be used jams, jellies and sloe gin! Height: 4m (13'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting Distance: 25cm (10"). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. Try the petals steeped in wine for an extra zing to your drink, or crystallise them for use as baking decoration or that extra sweet treat. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant Blackthorn in any moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Incorporate plenty of compost or well-rotted manure prior to planting. Ideally grown in full sun.

Water regularly until fully established. Blackthorn require little aftercare. Simply remove any diseased, damaged or crossing shoots to maintain a healthy framework. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plants in spring, taking care not to mound mulch up against the stems.
