The young foliage of this eye-catching Indian Bean Tree unfurls in a striking, deep slate-purple colour which gradually matures to dark green. The large 30cm (12") tall panicles of white, foxglove-like flowers appear in summer, followed by long slender pods. A magnificent RHS AGM variety, Catalpa x erubescens 'Purpurea' makes a splendid specimen tree for a large garden, but where space is limited it can be pollarded to form a handsome large shrub. Supplied in 9cm pot. Height and spread if not pollarded: Up to 12m (39').

Plant Catalpa trees in moist, well drained, fertile soil in full sun, with shelter from strong winds. Add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils, and stake trees firmly.

Water Indian Bean Trees regularly until fully established. Although they are fully hardy once they are mature, the young plants will benefit from some winter protection during very cold periods. When pruning Catalpa trees, remove any damaged or crossing stems to maintain a healthy open framework, in winter or early spring. Indian Bean Trees may also be grown as pollards to restrict their size. Cut back all stems to 3 buds from the base of the plant each spring.
