Looking for some late summer drama to take the stage just as other perennials bow out? These Dinner Plate divas are guaranteed to deliver a wow-factor performance all the way from July to October. The whopping blooms come in a fiery mix of hot colours and stretch to at least 20cm in diameter. Each spectacular bloom is held aloft on strong, long stems so not only can you admire them in the border, but they’ll also make fabulous cut flowers displays. These tall varieties are best grown in the middle or back of the border where their giant blooms will upstage their neighbours and create a dramatic focal point just as other flowers are beginning to fade.

Dahlia Dinner Plate Duo contains the following varieties:

Dahlia ‘Sun Explosion’ – A double, decorative variety the petals streaked with red flames and surrounded by golden yellow margins. Height: 100cm (39in). Spread: 50cm (20in).
Dahlia 'Bodacious' – Twirling petals in a fiery combo of carmine red and yellow with each giant flower measuring a massive 25cms across! Height: 150cm (59in). Spread: 60cm (24in).

Plant Dahlia tubers outdoors in April after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.

Feed and water dahlias regularly throughout the growing season. While plants are still young, pinch out the growing tip of each stem to encourage bushier growth and masses of flowers. As dahlias develop, the taller varieties will require staking with garden canes to support their stems. Deadhead faded dahlia flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. With the first autumn frosts, remove tubers from their growing positions and trim away the old stems to 5cm above the tuber. Clean any remaining soil from the tubers and store them over winter in trays of peat or sand, in a cool but frost free position. The tubers can be planted the following spring for another fabulous display.
