A stately perennial for damp borders
Nectar-rich blooms are loved by pollinating insects
Thompson & Morgan is delighted to work alongside the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to offer special seed collections to home gardeners. This Kew Pollinators Collection has been specially selected by The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
A majestic perennial for damp borders and waterside plantings. Hemp Agrimony rises to spectacular heights, its dull red stems topped with panicles of dusky pink blooms in late summer. The palmate, hemp-like foliage of Eupatorium maculatum forms a broad, spreading clump that makes a handsome addition to planting schemes. This native wildflower is a magnet for pollinating insects which throng to its nectar-rich blooms. Height: 150cm (59"). Spread: 120cm (48").
1 Packet (40 Seeds) (KB7581)
Sow Eupatoium indoors from March to May for at 20C in a good seed compost. Sow seed on the surface of the compost, gently firm down and cover with a light layer of compost or vermiculite. Do not exclude light as this is required for germination. Keep soil damp but not wet. Germination usually takes up to 30 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors.
When Eupatorium plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Choose a position in sun or semi shade on well-drained soil which remains reliably moist.
Alternatively, direct sow Eupatorium seeds outdoors where they are to grow from May to June on well-prepared soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to 30cm (12”) apart.
