Pot up Honeysuckle plants and grow them on in cool, frost free conditions. When plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting out in their final positions. Plant honeysuckle against a suitable, sturdy support such as trellis or strong wires attached to walls and pergolas, in fertile, moist, free draining soil. Poor soils can be improved by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. Choose a position in sun or semi-shade. When growing honeysuckle in patio containers, use soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.
Feed and water lonicera regularly throughout the growing season until they are fully established. Check young shoot tips regularly as honeysuckle plants are susceptible to aphid damage, particularly when grown in full sun. Prune immediately after flowering, first removing the oldest stems, then reducing the remaining stems to restrict their vigorous growth to the available space. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant in spring. Caution: Honeysuckle berries are harmful if eaten.
