Description How to Grow More Info Delivery Reviews
This striking evergreen perennial forms clumps of smooth matt-black, grass-like leaves from which rise dainty stems of contrasting mauve flowers in summer. The bell-shaped blooms are followed by dark inky-blue berries which persist throughout winter for added interest. A stunning contrast to any brightly coloured plant, Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' is hardy and robust, making a wonderful low-maintenance addition to patio containers, rock gardens, woodland gardens or borders. With a spreading habit, Black Lilyturf is particularly useful as a groundcover plant. Height: 20cm (8"). Spread: 30cm (12"). Supplied in 9cm pots.

Plant Ophiopogon in moist, fertile, well drained soil with an acid to neutral pH. Choose a final position in borders or patio containers in sun or semi shade. Work in plenty of compost or well rotted manure prior to planting. Plant Black Lilyturf at its original soil level before firming in and watering well to settle the soil.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

Black Lilyturf requires little aftercare but will appreciate a mulch of leaf mould or garden compost in autumn. Feed and water container-grown Ophiopogon plants throughout the growing season. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps in spring when necessary.
