Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Kiwi 'Ken's Red' is a heavy-cropping variety that is sweeter than green-fruited cultivars. The fruits are the size of large gooseberries and with their distinctive red skin and aromatic flesh, they both look and taste delicious. They are excellent for short term storage as they remain firm after picking and don’t bruise easily.

Kiwi arguta, also known as the Baby Kiwi or Hardy Kiwi, is ideal for growing in the UK. Fully hardy, they survive temperatures down to -15 to -10C. Hardy Kiwi produce masses of small, smooth, gooseberry-sized fruit that are sweeter than other Kiwis and don’t need to be peeled as they lack the hair-like covering of other Kiwi fruits. Established vines can produce up to 13kg of fruit. They form fast-growing, twining climbers with simple ovate leaves and fragrant, creamy-white flowers in summer. Hardy Kiwis make an attractive feature for a trellis, pergola or wall in a sunny, south-facing position. The oval fruits are ready to harvest in September, packed with Vitamin C and delicious eaten straight from the vine. Height and spread: 3-4m (10-13ft).

Pollination: Female variety (requires a male variety for pollination).

1 x 2 Litre Potted Plant (Height 60cm+) (KF3197)

Grow kiwi plants in a sunny position in any fertile, well drained soil. A sheltered position is essential as kiwis are particularly sensitive to adverse weather conditions. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Plant kiwi vines, firm in and water well. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate support wires strung between sturdy posts, to train as an espalier.

Feed and water regularly until fully established, particularly during hot dry periods. Train the stems onto their supports. In autumn apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.

Prune kiwi fruit plants in winter. In the first two years, prune plants to create an espalier framework of one permanent leading stem and two horizontal stems. Cut back the leading shoot to maintain it within the allotted space. Fruit is formed on the previous year's wood, and also on fruit spurs created by cutting back side shoots on horizontal stems to 3 or 4 buds. Overcrowded side shoots can be thinned out to allow light and air around the developing fruit. Plants may take 3 years before producing a full crop of delicious kiwi fruit.

Van Meuwen strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.
