Provides a long harvest of tasty and nutritious leaves for fresh pickings through summer and well into autumn. The loose heads of Lettuce ‘Skilton’ are formed of softly textured leaves which can be picked individually as and when required or simply harvest the whole head if making a large salad. Simple to grow and producing a rewarding harvest, sow successively directly outdoors throughout spring and into early summer and enjoy your fresh crop from summer until the first frosts. A lovely, crisp texture makes this a great choice for adding a bit of extra bite to a sandwich as well as within salads or as an attractive garnish. Shows an excellent level of resistance to downy mildew. Height: 20cm (8”). Spread: 20cm (8”).

Direct sow lettuce seeds outdoors from March to July into well prepared, fertile, moist soil in sun or semi shade. Sow seeds thinly at a depth of 1cm (1/2”) in drills 30cm (12") apart in soil which has been raked to a fine tilth. When large enough to handle, thin out seedlings to 30cm (12") apart and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Make regular sowings for a constant supply.

Water lettuce frequently and hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing. A thick mulch applied around the plants will help to retain moisture in the soil. Harvest lettuce when required by pulling up the entire plant before trimming off the stem with a knife.

Perfect for sandwiches, salads and garnishing. The dark green leaves of lettuce are a good source of betacarotene and vitamin A.
