Description How to Grow More Info Delivery Reviews
This upright flowering cherry tree has a neat, columnar habit giving rise to the common name 'Flagpole Cherry Tree'. In late spring, this RHS AGM variety becomes smothered in delightful white-pink blossom, which has a delicate scent and is highly attractive to bees. Come autumn, the foliage takes on fiery tones of yellow, orange and red for an extended season of interest. Perfect grown as a focal point in the garden, Prunus 'Amanogawa' is low-maintenance and a superb tree for small gardens. Height: 6m (20'). Spread: 2.5m (8'). Supplied as a bare root tree.

Plant flowering cherry trees in full sun or semi shade, in any well drained garden soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Newly planted cherry trees should be fastened to a stake to prevent them from rocking in windy weather. Drive the stake into the ground prior to planting. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball of the tree. Plant cherry trees at their original soil level and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie. Water well.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

Water Prunus plants regularly until fully established. Prunus 'Amanogawa' requires little attention. Simply remove any diseased, damaged or crossing shoots to maintain a healthy framework. When pruning cherries it is preferable to wait until midsummer to avoid the risk of ‘silver leaf’ infection. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of Flagpole cherry trees in spring, taking care not to mound mulch up against the stem.
