Slightly earlier flowering than other species of Roscoea, this exotic-looking perennial bursts into life in late spring to reveal strap-shaped leaves on sturdy, fleshy stems. A succession of elegant, orchid-like, cream blooms follow in early and mid summer. Perfectly hardy and great for tricky shady spots, grow Roscoea humeana f.lutea in partially shaded borders, woodland gardens or rock gardens for something a bit different! This hardy ginger has been awarded a prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 25cm (10"). Spread: 15cm (6"). Supplied as tubers.

Choose a position in partial or dappled shade and plant Roscoea tubers in a neutral to acid, fertile, moist but well-drained soil. They will grow happily in improved clay soils. Dig in plenty of well rotted manure or compost prior to planting to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and water in well.

Water Roscoea purpurea regularly during dry periods. Once established hardy ginger requires little attention. In the autumn, apply a deep mulch of compost or bark chips to protect tubers from the harshest winter weather. The mulch can be removed in mid-spring. Growth may be slow to re-emerge, particularly after extreme winters.
