Game, set and munch! Serve up your own fresh strawberries and cream whilst watching the grand tennis spectacle with our ‘Strawberry British Grown Wimbledon Collection’. These three varieties offer an extended cropping season so you can continue to enjoy juicy, fresh strawberries well past the end of the tournament. Ideal for garden beds or patio containers, and for an even longer season, try growing some in a greenhouse or polytunnel.

Strawberry British Grown Wimbledon Collection contains the following varieties:

  • Strawberry ‘Allegro’ – Looking for a super vigorous variety that can cope with poorer soils and small spaces where crop rotation is a challenge? This very early season variety exhibits exceptional resistance to endemic soil borne diseases as well as botrytis and mildew. The large, bright red fruits have an excellent flavour and high sugar content.
  • Strawbery ‘Flamenco’ If space is limited, try growing this ever-bearing variety to maximise your crop of sweet and juicy fruits over a long picking period. So sweet it needs no sugar, the fruit is ready to harvest from mid-May until November with the peak of the fruit produced in early September.
  • Strawberry ‘Vibrant’ – A super-charged, early season strawberry that fruits in as little as 60 days from planting. Large numbers of flowering trusses are produced in succession offering an extended cropping period plus each truss carries only 4 to 5 flowers thus maintaining a larger fruit. Plants crop from May through June, and from the second year will offer a subsequent crop in September. Top rated in the Horticultural Development Council trials.

Estimated time to cropping once planted: 4-8 months.
Estimated time to best yields: 16-20 months.

Plant strawberry plants in autumn or late spring in a sheltered, sunny position in well manured, free draining soil. Plant strawberry plants every 45cm (18”) in rows spaced at 75cm (30”) apart. Avoid planting them too deeply as this may cause them to rot. Alternatively try growing strawberry plants in hanging baskets or in specially designed strawberry planters for the patio.

Water strawberries frequently throughout the growing season and weed regularly between rows. When growing strawberry plants in baskets and containers, they will also need feeding every two weeks.

From early summer, remove any runners that are produced as these will weaken the plants vigour. Protect the developing fruit from slugs and snails by spreading straw around each plant. Positioning a net over the plants will also prevent crop damage by birds. The netting and straw can be removed after cropping to allow better air flow around the crown of the plant. Mulch strawberry plants with well rotted manure in spring.

Although strawberry plants will continue to fruit in successive years, the crop will become considerably reduced and it is advisable to completely replace strawberry plants every 3 years.
