When growing bamboo in patio containers, use a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position in full sun or semi shade with shelter from cold winds. Alternatively plant bamboo directly into borders in any fertile, moist, free draining soil. Bamboos particularly dislike very dry soil. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding some well rotted manure or compost.
Feed and water container grown bamboos regularly. Bamboos planted directly into borders will require watering for the first two years until fully established. In autumn thin out the oldest canes, cutting them back to ground level, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Mature bamboos can be lifted and divided in autumn if clumps become congested. In winter, protect canes from cold drying winds.
