Especially dark foliage provides a dramatic backdrop for very dark red, double flowers. Flowering from January to March, Camellia japonica ‘Black Lace’ injects rich colour into the grey winter landscape, its evergreen foliage continuing to provide structure and interest long after the flowers have faded. This versatile flowering evergreen shrub makes a beautiful specimen for a woodland garden, a patio container or grown as a dense screen or flowering hedge in acidic soils. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Camellia plants require a moist, well drained, acid soil in a sheltered, shaded position. In areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, grow Camellia plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3 and position in dappled shade.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Camellias occasionally with fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds and strong early morning sunlight, as this may cause the buds to drop in early spring.

Camellias will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their roots from winter cold. Camellias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems and remove faded blooms immediately after flowering.
