Campanula portenschlagiana ‘Catharina’ is one of those useful plants which deserves a place in every garden where it will soften walls, border edges, steps and paving with creeping mats of heart-shaped foliage. In summer it produces massy of starry, bell-shaped flowers which create carpets of lilac-blue. This campanula will happily do its own thing with little maintenance although you might want to shear it back after flowering to keep plants neat and compact. Height: 20cm (8in). Spread: 30cm (12in).

Grow Campanula portenschlagiana in a well-drained soil where it will not sit wet in winter. This cultivar spreads less than the species but may need to be kept in check if planted near delicate alpines. No maintenance required, though plants can be trimmed back after flowering to keep a tidy, compact habit.
