Crab Apple 'Brandywine' ticks all the boxes when it comes to great trees for small gardens, offering  scented blossom, spring and autumn foliage colour plus autumn fruits.

Crab Apple 'Brandywine' is particularly admired for the brilliance of its spring blossom – in April it transforms into a cloud of light pink, double flowers that resemble miniature roses – they even have a sweet fragrance. Dark green foliage is tinged with red in the spring, developing richer purple-red shades in the autumn before falling. Autumn also sees small yellow crab apple fruits.

Crab Apple 'Brandywine' forms a small, rounded tree that makes an ideal multi-season, specimen tree for smaller gardens. Please note that this variety is sterile and cannot be used to pollinate other crab apples or eating apples. Height: 5m (16ft). Spread: 4 m (13ft).

Plant crab apple trees in a sheltered, sunny position in any fertile, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole and drive the stake into the ground to support the tree. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball. Plant fruit trees at their original soil level and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well. Crab Apple 'Maypole Column' requires a well sheltered position to prevent damage to fruit buds from wind and cold as side branches may develop when buds are damaged.
Fruit trees do not suffer weed competition well. Keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. In spring, while the ground is moist, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the base of the tree, taking care not to mound it up against the stem. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer. Feed and water crab apple trees during particularly dry periods. Crab apples require only minimal pruning in late winter or spring, to remove damaged, diseased or misplaced growth. Crab apple fruits can be harvested from autumn onwards to make delicious crab apple jelly.
