A vigorous, cormous perennial with elegant, arching sprays of bright red flowers in late summer and early autumn. Earlier in the season the sword-shaped leaves are great for adding vertical interest to borders. Crocosmia 'Lucifer' has been awarded an RHS AGM and looks superb planted in drifts through borders, providing a welcome splash of late season colour. Montbretia also thrive in coastal gardens and make excellent cut flowers. Height: 100cm (39"). Spread: 10cm (4").

Culinary information: A yellow dye is obtained from the flowers and then used as a saffron substitute for colouring foods. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Grow Crocosmia plants in fertile, moist, well drained soil in full sun or part shade.

Crocosmia plants are easy to grow and require minimal attention. Cut back faded crocosmia flowers and foliage in autumn before applying a mulch of bark chips or well rotted compost. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of crocosmia bulbs in autumn.
