In April and May, pure white heart-shaped flowers hang in tidy rows from the arching stems of Dicentra spectabilis ‘Alba’, making a welcome sight above the finely cut leaves. Inspired by the unusual shape of the flowers, this lovely plant also goes by the name of the Lyre Flower, Dutchman’s Breeches, or Bleeding Heart. It grows well in a moist, shady spot, its bright white blooms bringing a splash of light to a dark corner. Height: 120cm (48"). Spread: 45cm (18").

Choose a position on any moist, rich, fertile soil in dappled or semi shade. Dicentra prefers a neutral to slightly alkaline soil.

Water regularly until fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of chipped bark or well-rotted garden compost to the base of the plant. Dicentras have particularly fragile roots and are best left undisturbed if possible. However, overcrowded clumps may be divided in late autumn or early spring if necessary.
