Plant Euonymus in any well-drained soil; it will grow happily in improved clay soils. Add plenty of well rotted manure prior to planting to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Choose a final position in full sun or semi-shade that is sheltered from cold winter winds. Although Winter Creeper will happily grow in full shade, leaf variegation will be strongest in full sun. Alternatively plant Euonymus fortunei in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Caution: Harmful if eaten.
Feed and water Euonymus shrubs regularly until fully established. Once established, Euonymus fortunei requires little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in mid-spring. After flowering in mid-summer, lightly cut back shoots to encourage bushy growth. Occasionally, plain green-leaved shoots may grow which should be removed back to their base as soon as they appear. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
