The first Hydrangea in the 'Endless Summer' series, Hydrangea 'The Original' was ground-breaking in its ability to flower on old and new wood, giving an exceptional bloom period from May through to September! As with most Hydrangea macrophyllas, this variety changes colour depending on your soil pH, ranging from forget-me-not blue through shades of delightful purple and pink. Compact and sturdy, Hydrangea 'The Original' is perfect for patio containers or as a focal point in mixed borders and woodland gardens. Hydrangea flowers are also excellent for cutting, lasting well in a vase. Height: 1.2m (4’). Spread: 1.5m (5’).

When growing hydrangeas, choose a sunny or semi shaded spot that is sheltered from cold winter winds. Plant in borders in rich moist, well drained soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure to improve heavy clay or light sandy soils. Alternatively plant hydrangea in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3.

Feed and water container grown plants regularly. As plants increase in size they will require repotting into increasingly larger pots. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of border grown plants. Leave faded hydrangea flower heads in place until new buds swell the following spring. These will help protect the delicate buds from frost damage. Prune stems in spring, removing any rubbing, damaged or diseased stems and reducing stems to maintain a permanent woody framework.
