Perfectly proportioned for small gardens, Knautia macedonica ‘Thunder and Lightning’ delivers a storming performance in a low, well-behaved mound which won’t flop or need support. It retains all the excellent attributes of taller varieties plus generously variegated foliage with striking cream margins to the grey-green leaves. Bright cerise, pin-cushion flowers are held on wiry stems above the foliage from mid-summer to autumn. Ideal for small borders or containers and absolutely adored by bees and butterflies. Height and spread: 45cm (18in).

Grow Knautia in borders in full sun. Field scabious prefers a well-drained, alkaline or neutral soil and is particularly suitable for chalky garden soils.

Water Knautia plants regularly until fully established. Deadhead faded field scabious flowers to prolong blooming. In autumn, cut back old stems to just above ground level to make way for new growth in the spring.
