Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
As one of the longest flowering varieties, Magnolia 'George Henry Kern' is the perfect choice for Magnolia lovers who want to enjoy their fragrant flowers for as long as possible. Its opulent rose-pink flowers bloom from April to June. Magnolia 'George Henry Kern' is a unique hybrid which offers the spring flowering of Magnolia stellata types with the robust, showy blooms of Magnolia liliflora. It is deciduous and slow growing, so it can be potted in a patio container for many years before planting out in the garden, or you can plant it straight into a border and watch over the years as it grows and becomes more of a prominent feature of your garden. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: up to 2.5m (8.2').

Culinary information: The young flowers, once separated, can be pickled and then used either on their own as a treat or in salads. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Choose a sunny or semi shaded position that is protected from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a moist, well drained acid to neutral soil that is high in organic matter. If you don't have acid soil, incorporate plenty of ericaceous compost into your border prior to planting. Plant bareroot Magnolias at the same depth as they were previously planted. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until young Magnolia plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Magnolia standards require little pruning other than to maintain their shape and remove damaged stems.
