With wide trumpet shaped flowers in a beautiful cherry red, Penstemon ''Sweet Cherry' deserves pride of place in your garden. The long-lasting blooms appear in summer above a flush of glossy, semi-evergreen foliage and continue well into autumn, long after other plants have started to fade. Penstemons are undemanding and easy to grow hardy perennials, and tolerate almost any position in the garden, withstand rain or drought, and even resist damage from slugs. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 45cm (18").

Penstemon plants dislike cold, wet soils in winter. Plant them in a well drained site, adding compost or well rotted manure to amend heavy clay soils. Choose a position in full sun or semi shade.

Feed and water Penstemon plants regularly until they are fully established. Cut back faded Penstemon flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure around the crown of each plant in autumn or spring. Avoid pruning back old foliage until spring arrives, as this will help to protect the plant during winter.
