Rhododendron 'XXL Yellow' is an exciting new hybrid rhododendron featuring extra-large flowers paired with a neat, rounded habit.

Rhododendron 'XXL Yellow' boasts soft yellow blooms measuring up to an impressive 8cm across. This low-maintenance, medium-sized evergreen offers all season foliage interest and structure plus a captivating display of colour throughout April and May that is perfect for brightening up shady borders. 'XXL Yellow' will thrive in partial shade with acid soil or planted into containers of ericaceous compost where it will deliver year round colour on your patio. Maximum height: 2m (6.5ft). Spread: 1.5m (5ft).

Grow Rhododendrons in moist, well drained, acid soil that has been enriched with plenty of well rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply.

Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
