Plant Skimmia in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil; it will grow happily in improved clay soils. Skimmia prefers a neutral to acid soil but will grow in improved chalky soils. Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost prior to planting. Choose a final position in partial shade or full shade; full sun can cause yellowing of the leaves. Alternatively plant Skimmia in patio containers in soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Caution: Fruits are harmful if eaten.
Feed and water Skimmia shrubs regularly until fully established. Once established, Skimmia requires little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in mid-spring. If more shaping is needed, lightly cut back shoots after flowering in mid-summer. In autumn, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant.
