When growing roses, choose a position in fertile well drained soil in full sun.Roses are greedy plants so add a small handful of granular fertiliser and mix some well rotted manure or compost to the soil. Dig a hole of sufficient width and depth to comfortably accommodate the plant. Position the plant in the hole so that the base of the stems sits just below soil level. Backfill the soil around the roots of the plant, firm in, and water well.
Feed and water rose plants regularly and deadhead faded flowers. When growing roses it is necessary to remove any suckers that arise from the base of the plant, below the graft union. In winter, begin pruning Polyantha roses by removing dead and diseased wood, and any rubbing or damaged branches. Then reduce the stems to 20cm (10") above ground level. Side shoots should be reduced to two buds. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant after pruning.
