Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Named after one of the heaviest and tallest sumo wrestlers, Akebono Tar?, this robust Darwin hybrid boasts huge double flowers on strong stems. Tulip 'Akebono' promises a winning garden performance and exceptional longevity - the bulbs reflowering year on year in well-drained conditions.

Akebono also means "dawn" in Japanese, reflecting the luminescent colour palette of this gorgeous variety. Slightly wavy, primrose-yellow petals blushed with pink, are etched with fine red margins. Striped sepals deliver a final flourish of contrasting green that completes the picture perfectly. Planted en masse, Tulip ‘Akebono’ creates radiant pools of warm, spring sunshine while each individual bloom invites close appreciation of its sophisticated colouring. Flowering late April to early May, this late variety extends the spring show. If you can bear to steal some from the garden, they make fabulous cut flowers. Height: 50cm (20in). Spread: 15cm (6in)

Plant tulip bulbs in late summer or autumn. Tulips will grow well in any moist, well drained soil, except for particularly wet soils. Choose a sunny position that is sheltered from strong winds. When planting tulip bulbs avoid shallow planting as this may reduce the winter cold period that is essential for tulip bulbs to produce flowers in spring. Plant them at a depth of 15cm (6") and at a distance of 13cm (5") apart.
After flowering, deadhead the faded tulip flowers and allow the foliage to die back completely before removing it in summer. Caution: Tulip bulbs are an irritant to skin and eyes, and are harmful if eaten.
