GALTONIA

Flowering time: late summer
Height: 3-4ft (1-1.2m)

Aftercare: Grow in fertile well-drained soil that is reliably moist, from spring to summer in full sun. In areas with severe winters, lift and pot up in late autumn and overwinter in a cool greenhouse or protect with a winter mulch.

GENISTA LYDIA

Flowering time: early summer
Height: 2ft (60cm); spread 40in (1m)
Aftercare: Fully hardy to half hardy. Grow in light, poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Do not cut into old wood.

GERANIUMS (Winter Hardy)

Flowering time: June to July
Height: 12-16in (30-40cm)
Aftercare: Will grow in any garden soil, but must not become waterlogged. Can be planted in sun or partial shade.

GERANIUMS (Trailing Ivy Leaf)

Flowering time: May to October
Aftercare: These are ideal for hanging baskets, patio tubs and window boxes. Fill container with John Innes No 2 potting compost or a mixture of peat and good garden soil, placing crocks in base for drainage. Plant Geraniums so they will trail over edge of container. Keep well watered during flowering period. Do not allow to dry out.

GLADIOLI

Flowering time: July to September
Height: 4ft (120cm)
Aftercare: Any sheltered, well drained garden site is suitable for Gladioli. Well rotted manure, dug in well in advance of planting, is beneficial. Plant as soon as the ground is workable between early March and mid May, placing the corms 4 inches (10cm) deep, preferably on a layer of sand. They may be planted 4 to 6 inches (10-15cm) apart in clumps; or in rows 18 inches (45cm) apart, leaving a distance of about 4 inches (10cm) between the corms. Water liberally in dry weather and mulch to conserve moisture. In the autumn, when growth has stopped and the leaves begin to turn brown, lift carefully, removing surplus soil, and cut off the stems about half inch (1.5cm) above the new corms. Store in a dry, airy and frost proof place. During the winter or early spring, clean them by breaking off the old wilted corms at the base and removing the small cormlets. It is essential that the corms are kept in a dry, frost proof place, otherwise damp or frost can spoil them.

GLADIOLI (Winter Hardy)

Flowering time: June to July
Height: 16-20in (40-50cm)
Aftercare: Choose a sunny, well-drained, sheltered position and plant 3 inches (8cm) deep and 4 inches (10cm) apart, during October or November. Cover with peat, straw, ashes or cloches to give protection from frosts. After flowering, lift, dry and store the corms until the following season.

GUERNSEY LILY (Nerine)

Flowering time: August to November
Height: 18in (45cm)
Aftercare: Plant the bulbs 4 inches (10cm) deep and 6 inches (15cm) apart in any ordinary, well drained soil, preferably in a sunny border against a wall. Leave undisturbed until plants become crowded. Lift, divide and replant, generally every four years.

GUNNERA

Height: 6ft (180cm); spread 6ft (180cm)
Aftercare: Fully hardy to frost hardy. Grow in deep permanently moist, humus rich soil in sun or partial shade. Large species need shelter from cold drying winds in frost prone areas. Protect the crowns of large species in winter with a dry mulch.
