Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Dangling prettily on long stalks like lanterns, the flowers of Abutilon megapotamicum are unmistakable – with a puffy red calyx bursting into yellow petals from which protrude purple anthers. Abutilon megapotamicum 'Variegatum' goes one step further, combining the exotic flowers with gold-splashed foliage. This evergreen to semi-evergreen half-hardy shrub can be grown outside in mild, sheltered climates. Its long, arching branches are best trained against a warm and sunny wall. In colder areas, it can be grown permanently in a conservatory or planted into a container and brought outside for the summer months. Either way, Abutilon megapotamicum 'Variegatum' will reward with a long flowering season that stretches from late spring/early summer right through to the first frosts. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Ultimate height: 1.5-2.5m (4.9 - 8.2ft). Ultimate spread: 1-1.5m (3.2ft to 4.9ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Grow abutilon plants in any fertile, well drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position. A warm south or west facing wall that is protected from cold winds and hard frosts is ideal. In areas where temperatures regularly drop below -5C (23F), abutilon plants are best grown in large patio containers and moved to a frost free position over winter. When growing abutilon in patio containers, use a loam based compost such as John Innes No. 2.
Feed and water regularly throughout the spring and summer. Abutilon plants do not tolerate overly dry soil and may drop their foliage under such conditions. Prune abutilon lightly in spring, removing any damaged or dead stems.
