Description How to Grow More Info Delivery

Fargesia robusta ‘Pingwu’ is a non-invasive, clump-forming bamboo that rapidly forms a narrow but dense privacy screen and noise barrier. The culms emerge in spring a rusty red, transitioning to bright green and developing a distinctive checkerboard appearance as the sheaths fade to white. These stunning variegated culms persist until the end summer. Fargesia robusta ‘Pingwu’ is notably cold hardy, retaining its evergreen, glossy foliage down to winter temperatures of -20C.

Fargesia robusta ‘Pingwu’ is a tough bamboo that tolerates most soils providing they are free-draining. It is perfect for rapid screening and unlike more aggressive bamboo varieties, 'Pingwu' stays well-behaved, making it suitable for smaller gardens, urban spaces and even container-growing on the patio. Height: 2.5–4m (8.2-13ft). Spread:1.5–2.5m (4.9-8.2ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

When growing Fargesia rufa in pots, choose a soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold, drying winds. Fargesia is a non-invasive, clump-forming bamboo.
Feed and water bamboo plants regularly, particularly when grown in containers. Repot into successively larger containers as plants increase in size. Once bamboo plants are established, thin out any weak, damaged or unwanted canes in spring, cutting them back to ground level, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Mature bamboos can be divided in spring if clumps become congested.
