Feijoa sellowiana is an unusual evergreen shrub with extraordinary flowers which in hot summers will develop into delicious, guava-like fruit. It makes an eye-catching exotic that is hardy enough to grow outside in mild areas of the UK.

Feijoa sellowiana forms a large evergreen shrub clothed in grey-green leaves with dense white felting on the underside. In summer, globular, furry white buds open into puffy dark red petals that are white on the outside. The petals surround a starry burst of dark red filaments carrying yellow anthers. In hot summers, the blooms are followed by delicious green fruit. Scoop out the juicy, sweet pulp to enjoy a medley of tropical fruit flavours and an aromatic bouquet. The crisp, spicy-tasting petals are also edible and can be used in desserts or salads.

This distinctive shrub is guaranteed to attract curiosity. It is suitable for growing in coastal gardens and sheltered spots such as courtyards, urban gardens or against a warm wall. Height and Spread: 1.5-2.5m (4.9ft – 8.2ft).

Hardy in mild areas of the UK (-5 to 1C). Grow in freely draining soil in full sun. Choose a sheltered south or west facing position away from cold winds, such as against a warm wall. Plants can also be grown in containers in a greenhouse or polytunnel to maximise the chances of successful fruiting.
