For instant impact on your patio and a touch of the exotic, try the Canary Island date palm, winner of an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Architectural, broadly arching leaves consisting of many leaflets are borne gracefully from a stout columnar trunk. These mature plants are supplied at a height of 60-70cm (24-28") ready for an instant display in your garden! Phoenix canariensis is ideal for conservatories and perfect in patio containers which can be moved to a frost-free position over winter. In mild areas the Canary date palm may be grown in sheltered borders outdoors where it will tolerate temperatures down to -8°C (18°F). Height: 1.5m (5') when restricted in containers. If grown naturally in borders this palm can reach 5m (16') height and 3m (10') spread. Supplied in a 1 litre pot. Ceramic pot not included.

Phoenix Palm will reach full maturity height in 20-50 years.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

Grow Canary Island date palm in containers or sheltered borders in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun. If growing date palms in patio containers use a loam based compost such as John Innes No.2 or 3. Choose a container only slightly bigger than the pot supplied. Phoenix canariensis plants can be placed outdoors on sunny patios, or in a conservatory or greenhouse. In all but the mildest areas they will need to be brought under cover for the winter. Caution: Foliage may be irritant to skin.

Feed and water Phoenix plants regularly. Once established, Canary Island date palms are drought tolerant and plants grown outdoors will require less attention. Palms need little pruning. In spring remove dead or damaged foliage from lower down on the trunk. Wear gloves when pruning to avoid irritation to skin.

In winter, move container-grown plants to a frost-free position and keep the compost on the dry side. In mild areas Canary date palms may be overwintered outdoors if grown in sheltered borders and offered some winter protection with horticultural fleece. Repot container grown plants into increasingly larger pots as they increase in size.
