Abelia x grandiflora 'Gold Jewel' is distinguished by its compact size and colourful foliage that adds a valuable splash of brilliant gold into the garden landscape. In spring and summer, the leaves are sunshine yellow before maturing to warm copper in autumn/winter. From June until late autumn, clusters of tubular, lightly fragrant pale pink flowers appear, attracting pollinators. This very compact, semi-evergreen shrub forms tidy, rounded mounds that are perfect for smaller gardens. It will hold onto the majority of its leaves in all but the coldest winters. Ultimate height and spread: 90cm (35in).

Plant Abelia x grandiflora in garden borders in any fertile, well drained garden soil, in full sun. Alternatively grow Abelia plants in patio containers using soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.

Feed and water container-grown plants regularly. Deadhead faded Abelia flowers to prolong the flowering season. In exposed areas or those where winters are severe, apply a deep bark mulch around the base of Glossy Abelia plants in autumn to protect the roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound mulch up against the main stem. Alternatively protect with horticultural fleece. In late spring, trim Abelia x grandiflora lightly and remove any shoots which spoil the symmetry of the plant.
