The flowers of Camellia japonica ‘Fairy Blush’ may be small, but they are exceptionally prolific, go on for months and exude a lovely fragrance. From late winter to early spring, dark pink buds open into profuse clusters of small, single, blush pink flowers. The spent flowers are shed very efficiently maintaining its attractive appearance throughout its flowering period.

It forms a compact, bushy shrub with small, evergreen leaves, the new foliage emerging with pink tints. Camellia japonica ‘Fairy Blush’ makes an excellent choice for a woodland-type border with acid soil, a sheltered courtyard or wall border or a patio pot filled with ericaceous compost. Height and Spread: 1.5-2.5m (4.9-8.2ft).

Camellia plants require a moist, well drained, acid soil in a sheltered, shaded position. In areas where acid soil does not naturally occur, grow Camellia plants in patio containers using a mix of ericaceous compost and John Innes No. 3 and position in dappled shade.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Camellias occasionally with fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds and strong early morning sunlight, as this may cause the buds to drop in early spring.

Camellias will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their roots from winter cold. Camellias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems and remove faded blooms immediately after flowering.
